Mathematics at Yurran P-9 College is informed by the Victorian Curriculum
Aims
Mathematics aims to ensure that students:
develop useful mathematical and numeracy skills for everyday life and work, as active and critical citizens in a technological world
become confident, proficient, effective and adaptive users of mathematics
learn to confidently use maths in everyday life – at home, at work, and in the community – by thinking clearly, solving problems, and making informed decisions.
build strong skills in numbers, patterns, measurement, shapes, data, and chance, and learn how to apply these to solve problems and explain their thinking.
The Mathematics curriculum is organised into 6 interrelated strands. Each strand has a clear sequence for the development of concepts and skills across levels.
The 6 strands are:
Number
Algebra
Measurement
Space
Statistics
Probability (commencing at Level 3).
Yurran P-9 College utilises Teaching Mathematics Foundations to Middle Years Third Edition Dianne Siemon et al.
The text provides:
A clear focus on building mathematical proficiency in terms of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem solving, and mathematical reasoning
A strong emphasis on effective pedagogical approaches to teaching mathematics, including planning and assessment, interpreting and responding to data, working with diversity, and making mathematical connections across all areas of the curriculum
